When he saves Evelyn, we see how much of a classic screen hero he is, but Evelyn is also a hero too. That is exactly what he did in The Mummy and it works we still laugh when O’Connell tells the warden “Wait here, I’ll go get help” while the ship is on fire. Fraser brings comedy and heroism together very well in the film and he shows how one can play a role and be able to bring yourself to the character. This has to be one of Brendan Fraser’s best roles because it is so difficult seeing anyone else play the role of Rick O’Connell. It knows when to be serious and when to be comedic.

That is one thing The Mummy gets very well, the commitment to the tone. Who doesn’t remember Jonathan? One of the brightest comedic reliefs in monster films till this day. When you think of monster movies, comedy is not one of things that comes to mind, aside from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, but here it works in the film because it does not take itself too seriously. Their chemistry together bring a sense of action packed adventure and comedy to the film that makes the film so memorable and entertaining. There are many things to say about Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell, Rachel Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan, and John Hannah as Jonathan Carnahan in the film.

The set design, color palettes, and costumes of the film the beauty of what is in each frame is nothing short of awe inspiring. Why would we?The world of The Mummy is beautiful – from the desert, to the set pieces of Hamunaptra itself. We do not question the logic in the film. From the scarab beetles, to the actual mummy himself, what the creators of the film made was an Egyptian world that, while highly fictionalized, it still works so well in making us believe in the magic of the world it exists in. Many would expect us to always refer back to the original classic film, directed by Karl Freund and starring Boris Karloff, but the modern version directed by Stephen Sommers has had much more of an impact on the current generation of movie buffs.

When we get asked the question, “Hey do you remember that Mummy movie?” we almost always respond with the one from 1999. The Mummy, across two decades, is still so popular. From theaters, to home video, to an amusement park ride at Universal Studios, it has been a twenty year journey for this film. Directed by Stephen Sommers, starring, Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah, The Mummy 1999 was not received well by some critics in its initial release, but as time went on and the film went to home video, it has become a cult classic Universal Monster film that we all have come to love.
